It is that time of year…engagement season! Around the holidays, people feel reconnected and united with their friends and family, especially if they are heading home or spending extra time with their loved ones in town.
This often inspires proposals, since couples are able to celebrate and share the occasion with the people that matter most. There are so many different places, times of day, and unique ways to actually pop the question—and a little searching around on the internet will show you some of the most creative proposals you could ever imagine.
That being said, there is also something special about simplicity in an engagement, and there are plenty of examples of sweet and meaningful proposals that are not over-the-top, but beautiful nonetheless.
No matter if you go big or go simple—a little planning and thought goes a long way in making a lasting memory. Coming from a photography studio’s perspective, the best choice that an individual proposing can make is to hire a photographer to capture the element of surprise—and the “yes” moment from behind the scenes.
These are the kind of photos a couple will treasure forever and really appreciate as they anticipate their wedding day, and for many years to come after. Proposals are typically a surprise (at least for one of the two involved), and it is gaining popularity to invite a photographer along to capture the moment.
Engagement sessions (which we will cover next week) are very common for announcements and pre-wedding festivities, but capturing the proposal moment is a special occasion deserving of professional photography!

LakeShore Photography and Video has had the opportunity to take part in surprise proposal photography, and we want to share three of our favorites with you in this post.

Becky and Josh, Wabash Bridge
A romantic proposal in downtown Chicago at night. Fireworks lit up in the sky as Josh proposed to Becky–and she said yes!
LakeShore Photography and Video also had the pleasure of being apart of Josh and Becky’s wedding shortly after.

The Faisels, Adler Planetarium
A unique proposal at Adler Planetarium in museum campus, Chicago. This proposal “written in the stars,” so to speak–a very thoughtful and romantic moment. Utilizing a planned and private space made this engagement fun to shoot but also beautiful to watch unfold.

Dana and James, City Winery
A daytime proposal at city Winery allowed us to play with the sunlight and a beautiful patio environment, to capture Dana and James’ unique engagement. They celebrated with a beautiful dessert immediately following, which allowed for a nice detail shot of Dana’s engagement ring after the proposal.
While winter weddings are beautiful, especially in snowy Chicago, this time of year is really the time that we focus on engagement season and celebrating the happy proposals of the holiday season. Having a photographer and/or videographer there to capture the special and surprise proposal moment can allow you and you partner to have memorable photography to look back on for years to come.
Surprise proposals are one of our specialties, and we always try to help with planning to make sure the couples we work with have the best possible photo-worthy moments for their engagements. Many of the couples we have worked with for engagement photography have also used our studio for their wedding day. This is wonderful, as we get to develop ongoing relationships with the clients we work with and be a part of their most meaningful life moments as a couple.
